After my previously abysmal shopping trips the past couple of times, I think I did well this week. I spent just under $73 and I bought toothpaste and a new toothbrush for Little Man with that. I will need to pick up a bag of potatoes later in the week since Wal-Mart doesn't carry an organic option, but it shouldn't be more than $3.
I'm also including school lunches as well, mostly to prep myself so I'm not wandering around tomorrow morning forgetting what the plan was.

Falling off the Wagon (Menu Plan too)
I committed the cardinal sin of budget grocery shopping last week. I went to the store without a meal plan or a list (smacking myself on the head!). I spent $150 and several times last week realized that I didn't have a key ingredient for whatever I was trying to make and went out and spent more money.
Of course, this past weekend was the official I'm out of everything Sam's run and we spent $158 there, plus another $100 at the store, because I didn't spend money last week on things we needed either. That brings me to today (August 10th) where of my $500 budget, I now have $92 for the rest of the month. Hmmm! It is very unlikely that I'll be able to pull that off, especially with no chicken and I'm spending around $150 on Sunday to pick up another 50 pounds of beef. Oh, and I've been having 14 kids at my house everyday drinking a gallon and a half of milk, so I need to buy more of that too. Yeah, I fell off the wagon and it doesn't look like I'm going to be getting up.
I did at least do a menu plan for this week, so here it is.
Breakfasts
Waffles, Oranges
Banana Muffins, Banana
Granola & Yogurt
Chocolate Chip Muffins, Apple Slices
Sausage Breakfast Pizza
Lunches
Mac 'n Cheese, Salad, Plums, Deviled Eggs
Scrambled Eggs w/ Sausage, Hash Browns, Toast, Mango
Chicken w/ Gravy, Mashed Potatoes, Roll, Pineapple
Fettucine Alfredo w/ Peas, Corn, Grapes, Peanut Butter and Carrots
Egg Salad or PB&J in a Pita Pocket, Oranges, Fruit Leather, Granola Bar (picnic lunch)
Snacks
Cookie Sticks (will post recipe soon)
Apple Slices
Nuts & Raisins
Cantaloupe
Dinners
Meatball Subs, Pasta Salad, Blueberries
Ham Casserole, Broccoli, Salad
Thanksgiving Casserole, Green Beans

The daycare is closed on Friday and we are taking a picnic lunch on the road with us as we head to Grandma's. The pork dinner is for Sunday evening when we get home.

Menu Plan Monday for week of July 25-31
Here it is! Another week, another menu. Dairy free eating is sort of getting me down. I'm finding that I spend a larger portion of my budget on a few dairy free items, leaving me less for other things that I use for snacks. This is frustrating my family because there isn't extra food lying around to be consumed when you just ate 2 hours ago. Plus, since we've been eating all the leftovers up quickly, I'm really scraping by to come up with meals on the weekends. Let's just say that we've had some interesting combinations.
Here's this week's menu.

Dairy free is going better this week. This is good news after an especially traumatic week last week (she believes that we are all out to get her). This week nearly all of our meals are dairy free to begin with, some just skip the cheese. Others just call for switching out butter in place of another oil. This is leading me to a quandry. There are items in my house that I swore I wouldn't purchase, but have anyway due to making this diet a little more appealing to my daughter. I bought white bread flour (hang head in shame). We are trying to go less processed and preservative free. Yes, I know that white flour is processed. LOL My problem is that for things like flour tortillas and pie crust, I haven't been able to make an acceptable from scratch whole wheat alternative. Purchasing these things from the store, you inevitably get a load of ingredients that you can't pronounce. Hence, the quandry. Is it better to use ingredients that I contol along with processed flour or buy whole grain items off the shelf with loads of fillers, dough conditioners, and who knows what else?
I have the same issue with shortening. Hubby bought a can for the oldest daughter when she made her cake on Sunday. I could've pointed out other healthier alternatives, but I wasn't around, so shortening was purchased. I have to say that when I went to make pie crust for my mini quiches on Monday morning and couldn't use butter, that shortening came in handy. Is it healthy? No. Is it an easy dairy free alternative? Yes.
I'm sure as time goes on, I'll get better at planning and finding substitutes. Although right now, if non-organic soy sour cream with partially hydrogenated everything keeps the peace in my house, I'll buy it and use it-sparingly. Then I'll say a prayer that eventually my girl can have cultured dairy without a problem!

Back to weekly shopping/menu planning
I've been doing my menu planning and shopping monthly for close to 6 months now. There are several advantages of doing this, but I'm seeing more disadvantages as summer approaches. First, it's hard to plan what to eat a month ahead when you don't know what you'll be doing activity-wise. This past month, I had to change several meals because of practices and meetings that I didn't know about when I planned the meals. Also, we really want to focus on being more active, so many times heavy evening meals won't work for us. It will be easier to plan just for the next week, as we'll know what we're doing and when (theoretically).
Second, since I'm really focusing on buying local, it will be easier to head to the farm/farmers' market first and pick up a few things and plan around them rather than hoping that I can find what I need. I did that this week for the first time and it worked really well. I think that if I go with a good idea what I already have on hand and with a few ideas in my head (or scratched on the back of an envelope), I will do ok.
Third, my budget it out of control. I've been overspending by about $100 the past three months. The first couple of times I blamed buying in bulk or stocking up on good meat sales, but I really have no excuse. I need to do better. My income drops in the summer and I'm determined not to alter my budget-I have to make it work.
The new plan is $500 for the month. The first week I get $100 for Sam's Club to stock up on items that will last all month. Then each week I will get $100 for groceries. When it's gone, I'm done. I've found this a little more challenging since I'm doing gluten/diary free for one of the girls. I don't have a lot on hand, but we'll make it work for this week at least. My goal is to really cut back on the gluten and dairy, so if I don't have an acceptable alternative, she will get to eat what we do this week. I'll make sure to pick up some alternatives next week when I shop.
Menu plan for week of May 30 - June 5

Total for week 1 = $189.49
I am out of eggs and my regular supplier's chickens aren't laying, so I'll be heading back out to the farm this week to pick up eggs. I can't function well with no eggs. I will probably go ahead and get 5 dozen if they are available which will run me right up to my limit.
Since I'm starting the weekly meal planning, I linked up to orgjunkie.com's Menu Plan Monday. There are tons of weekly menu plans. I might spend the next couple of hours checking them out! LOL

So far, so good
Day 1 is drawing to a close and so far, so good. I do have a bit of a headache, but not terrible. I did the monthly grocery shopping tonight and that probably contributed as much as the lack of soda. While I was out, I priced several items that I would like to begin purchasing in the near future.
Organic Coconut Oil - $6.99 (I believe this was for 16 oz., but I already have some from a previous use, so I'll use that first)
Organic Cane Sugar - $1.99/pound
Organic Whole Wheat Flour - $1.79 pound
I am looking at placing an order from Azure Standard, but the drop site is a couple hundred miles from me. My sister-in-law and brother-in-law live close, but I hate to bother them if I don't have to. Plus, that will be a costly venture and I want to make sure that I can swing my new budget before embarking on that. In the meantime, I am thinking of buying small amounts of different products to try them and figure out exactly what I want before purchasing a bulk quantity.
